Grey Crawford: Transfigurations, 1973/74, Silbergelatineabzug, 60 x 90 cm
Grey Crawford’s (b. 1951) early photographs from the Transfigurations series (1973/74) document the artist wrapping himself in black plastic bags and recording his own performance. Especially in Southern California, it was a period when performance art moved away from its original audience-based platform and into the area of photography. Crawford’s experiments with this type of format, incorporating locations ranging from the Mojave Desert to the famous ceramic slip installations of Douglas Humble in his own home. These activities were intertwined with Crawford’s other artistic work, yet in hindsight, they reveal another chapter in his career.
